Mac app sounds too loud at night: fix the right layer
Output device, system volume, alerts, notifications, and app audio are separate controls. Change the narrowest one that matches the noise, then test the night state before you rely on it.
The short answer: first confirm where sound is playing. Lower system output volume when everything is too loud, Alert volume when macOS alerts jump out, notification sounds or Focus when interruptions should be silent, and an app slider when one active source is louder than the rest.

01Choose the right output device first
Night audio starts with the destination. If the Mac switched from headphones to monitor speakers, the same app level can feel completely different. Apple's Sound output settings cover internal speakers, display speakers, headphones, external equipment, and AirPlay devices.
Pick the intended output before changing app levels. If the Mac is playing through display speakers by accident, a per-app slider only makes the wrong destination quieter.

02Set the room-wide ceiling, then alert volume
System output volume is the ceiling for the selected device. Apple notes that an app's own volume can be equal to or lower than the Mac output level, but it cannot override that ceiling. Set a comfortable overall level before tuning any app beneath it.
macOS also has a separate alert layer. Apple's Sound settings include Alert volume under Sound Effects, and alert volume is relative to the computer's output volume. Lower it when the problem is a system alert, error beep, or action warning.
Do not use per-app audio for a system alert problem. You will end up lowering browser, music, or meeting audio while the alert policy stays wrong.
If alerts need to stay visible without sound, Apple's alert sound page points to the accessibility option to flash the screen when an alert appears. That is better than keeping an alert sound loud because you are afraid of missing it.
03Fix notification policy before app volume
Notifications are a policy problem first. Apple Notifications settings let you change an individual app's notification behavior, including whether it plays a sound. Focus can silence notifications for a temporary window or on a schedule.
At night, ask whether the app should interrupt you at all. If the answer is no, change Notifications settings, use Focus, or change the app's own notification setting. There is no reason to lower a movie, call, or music app because a different app should stop pinging.
Use TeenySound only when the same app has audio you still want. Example: a chat app should not ping, but a huddle or call inside that app should stay audible. Notification policy and app output volume can be different settings.
04Lower one active app when it is the outlier
When one app is the problem, use the narrowest control. Start with the app's own volume. If that is missing, buried, or not repeatable, use TeenySound.

It saves app volumes by bundle ID and output-device UID, so a level used with headphones can differ from the one used with monitor speakers.
Do not copy someone else's percentages. Play the source that is actually too loud, lower it until speech or detail remains clear, then play a second app to confirm the system ceiling is still useful. If the output device changes, test again because the app can load the level saved for that device.
05Allow the permission only for per-app control
TeenySound's per-app mixer uses Apple's Core Audio tap path, which is available on macOS 14.2 or later. Access to outgoing app audio is behind the System Audio Recording privacy control. Without that permission, the per-app mixer cannot create the taps it needs.

06Use mute-all only for temporary quiet
Mute-all is for short windows: the phone rings, someone walks into the room, or you need to read without any app audio. It is not a replacement for deciding which app was too loud.
TeenySound's current mute-all path mutes controlled apps and system output. Its restore-all path restores each app's stored pre-mute or saved level and unmutes system output. That makes restore convenient, but it also means sound can return across the Mac. Confirm the selected output device before restoring late at night.

Verify the night state with known sounds
- Select the intended output device in Sound settings.
- Play a familiar clip in the app that was too loud and set the system ceiling.
- Trigger a harmless alert you recognize and check Alert volume separately.
- Confirm that apps meant to be quiet cannot play notification sounds, or turn on the intended Focus.
- Play the outlier app and a second app, then lower only the outlier.
- Switch away from and back to the intended output only if device-specific levels are part of your setup.
- Test mute-all and restore only when it is safe for sound to return.
Keep a small state card for repeat nights: selected output, system volume position, Alert volume position, active Focus, app exceptions, and the morning restore step. Record positions you can recognize rather than treating a percentage from another device as universal.
